The Planning Commission is the body now redrafting the data center rules — but data centers are NOT on this agenda. The only public hearing item is case R-26-16, a request by Giving Tree Lumber, LLC to rezone about 76 acres at 315 Carver Road in the Horsepasture District to Industrial District I-1. "Other Business" is listed as none. We are noting this so nobody turns out expecting a data center discussion that is not scheduled.

Speak at a Board of Supervisors meeting
This is the single most effective thing a resident can do, and it is not close. On July 29 a room full of people changed a unanimous vote. Public comment is on the record, it is reported on, and supervisors respond to it.

Individual constituent messages get counted and, when they are specific, quoted. Name your district, name the two or three requirements you want in the ordinance, and say why it matters where you live.

Most people in this county do not know the zoning rules are being rewritten right now. One conversation that ends with a neighbor in the room on a Tuesday afternoon is worth more than any number of shares.

If you have never done this, it is far less formal than it sounds. You get a few minutes, you say your piece, and you sit down.
Before you go
- Check the agenda in advance. To be placed on it yourself, call the County Administrator's Office at (276) 634-4601 at least 7 days before the meeting.
- Write down three sentences. Who you are and where you live, the one thing you want, and why it matters to you specifically.
- Pick one concrete ask from the rules we want. "Closed-loop cooling with no public water access" lands harder than "I'm against this."
In the room
- Say your name and your magisterial district. It establishes immediately that you are a constituent of someone on that board.
- Be specific and be brief. Two clear minutes beats five rambling ones, and you will be thanked for it.
- Stay civil. Supervisors are neighbors, and several have said publicly that they are still gathering information. Treating them as persuadable is both more accurate and more effective.
- Showing up matters even if you never speak. A full room is itself the message — that is what happened on July 29.
